The halo by halo missing baryon problem
نویسنده
چکیده
The global missing baryon problem — that the sum of observed baryons falls short of the number expected form BBN — is well known. In addition to this, there is also a local missing baryon problem that applies to individual dark matter halos. This halo by halo missing baryon problem is such that the observed mass fraction of baryons in individual galaxies falls short of the cosmic baryon fraction. This deficit is a strong function of circular velocity. I give an empirical estimate of this function, and note the presence of a critical scale of ∼ 900 kms therein. I also briefly review Ωb from BBN, highlighting the persistent tension between lithium and the CMB, and discuss some pros and cons of individual galaxies and clusters of galaxies as potential reservoirs of dark baryons.

Are the Red Halos of Galaxies Made of Low-mass Stars? Constraints from Subdwarf Star Counts in the Milky Way Halo
Surface photometry detections of red and exceedingly faint halos around galaxies have resurrected the old question of whether some non-negligible fraction of the missing baryons of the Universe could be hiding in the form of faint, hydrogen-burning stars. The optical/near-infrared colours of these red halos have proved very difficult to reconcile with any normal type of stellar population, but ...
متن کاملInferring dark halo structure from observed scaling laws of late type galaxies and LSB’s
We re-examine the Fall & Efstathiou (1980) scenario for galaxy formation, including the dark halo gravitational reaction to the formation of the baryon disk, as well as continuous variations in the intrinsic halo density profile. The recently published rotation curves of LSB and dwarf galaxies together with previously known scaling relations provide sufficient information on the present day str...

In this work, a lightly doped drain and source CNTFET with a linear channel impurity halo is proposed and the effect of linear halo slope variation on ON current, ON–OFF current ratio, leakage current, power–delay product (PDP) and cutoff frequency has been investigated. Proposed linear halo lightly doped drain and source CNTFETs has been simulated using non equilibrium Green’...
متن کاملCMB as a possible new tool to study the dark baryons in galaxies
Baryons constitute about 4% of our universe, but most of them are missing and we do not know where and in what form they are hidden. This constitute the so-called missing baryon problem. A possibility is that part of these baryons are hidden in galactic halos. We show how the 7-year data obtained by the WMAP satellite may be used to trace the halo of the nearby giant spiral galaxy M31. We detec...
متن کاملThe baryon halo of the milky way: A fossil record of its formation
Astronomers believe that the baryon (stellar) halo of the Milky Way retains a fossil imprint of how it was formed. But a vast literature shows that the struggle to interpret the observations within a consistent framework continues. The evidence indicates that the halo has built up through a process of accretion and merging over billions of years, which is still going on at a low level. Future s...
